Also known as 'teaberry' and 'checkerberry', Wintergreen is a small evergreen herb that grows up to 15 cm tall in the northeastern regions of Canada and forests of the USA.

Traditionally Wintergreen leaves were chewed by the first peoples of the Americas to increase lung capacity and assist in healing respiratory conditions. Early settlers from Europe chewed on it to help prevent tooth decay.Therapeutic Properties Described In The Aromatherapy Literature

Wintergreen essential oil is made up almost exclusively of methyl salicylate, a precursor to common aspirin. The salicylates pass through the skin, entering the tissues to inhibit the formation of prostaglandins, thereby reducing inflammation and pain.

- Effective in cases of lumbago, sciatica, neuralgia, gout, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Application and Use
Topical:
- In topical use, a dilution ratio of 25% or less to ensure safe absorption levels.
- For effective pain relief, Wintergreen can be blended blended to a 10% concentration in a carrier oil and massaged into the afflicted areas.
Inhalation:
- Wintergreen blends nicely with Ravensara and/or Eucalyptus to open the sinuses and enhance deep respiration.
Safety
Wintergreen essential oil should not be used by people who are allergic to aspirin. It is not recommended for ingestion; if internal use is desired, consultation with a physician is strongly recommended. Not recommended for use on children.
