Adding Novartis Drug Zometa To Chemotherapy Significantly Improved Overall Survival In Study Of Newly Diagnosed Multiple Myeloma Patients
New data to be presented tomorrow at the 46th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) in Chicago, IL, show that the addition of Zometa (zoledronic acid) to first-line chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival for newly diagnosed multiple myeloma patients by 16% (P=0.0118) and progression-free survival by 12% (P=0.0179) compared with oral clodronate plus first-line chemotherapy.

Blood-Sugar Lowering Medications May Increase Risk For False Positive Results In Cancer Screenings
A study presented at SNM's 57th Annual Meeting suggests that medication ingested to control blood-sugar levels can skew the results of cancer screenings using positron emission tomography (PET), a molecular imaging technique, by increasing absorption in the gut of the PET imaging agent called fluorodeoxyglucose (18F- FDG), which mimics sugar inside the body.

Phase III Study Showed First-Line Maintenance Use Of Rituxan Improved The Likelihood Of People With Follicular Lymphoma Living Without Their Disease Worsening
Genentech, Inc., a wholly owned member of the Roche Group, and Biogen Idec announced data from the Phase III PRIMA study. The data showed that continuing Rituxan (rituximab) for two years in patients who responded to initial treatment with Rituxan plus chemotherapy, doubled the likelihood of them living without their disease worsening (progression-free survival or PFS) compared to those who stopped treatment (based on a hazard ratio of 0.50, 95% CI, 0.39; 0.64; p=Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma).
