Also known as 'Rock Rose', Cistus is a small, sticky shrub native to the Mediterranean and Middle East.
About the Oil
This yellowish green essential oil is produced by steam distilling the leaves and tops of Cistus, naturally cultivated in Spain.Aromatherapy Notes
This Cistus oil has a strong, sweet rose top note followed by a dry, herbaceous middle note with menthol and eucalyptus-like undertones. The aroma is generally perceived as warming and restorative.Cistus blends well with Angelica, Cedarwood, Coriander, Chamomiles, Clary Sage, Cypress, Lavender, Frankincense, Juniper, Pine, Rose, Lemon and other citrus oils, Neroli, Petitgrain, Sandalwood, Patchouli, and Vetiver.
Traditional Uses
Traditionally has been used as a skin rejuvenator, treating infected wounds, skin ulcers, bronchitis, coughs, colds and flu, as a fumigant when infectious illness is around, as an ambient aroma to facilitate meditation. May be helpful during convalescence or when suffering from nervous exhaustion.Therapeutic Properties Described In The Aromatherapy Literature
Antibacterial, Anti-infectious, Anti-inflammatory, Antiviral, Hemorrhagic, Stimulant (immune system). (See Definitions.)
Respiratory System:
- Treats bronchitis and lung infections
- Quells persistent coughs
- Develops and maintains healthy lung function
Dermatological:
- Prevents wound infection
- Encourages cell regeneration (speeds the healing process)
- Treats inflammation associated with eczema
Psychological:
- Calms the sympathetic nervous system
- Alleviates depression
Application and Use
- Use Cistus in a diffuser for its uplifting aroma. It should be used sparingly in aromatic blends, as it can overpower other oils.
- It is excellent for mature skin care for firming and toning aging skin; blend with Green Myrtle oil, Rosehip Seed and Hazelnut oils.
- Blending with German Chamomile oil is popular in treatment of chronic slow healing skin disorders like psoriasis, and eczema.
- For lung support, use as an internal supplement: dilute one drop in 4 fl. oz. (or more) of liquid.
Safety
Cistus oil is generally non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing. Always test a small amount of essential oil first for sensitivity or allergic reaction. If pregnant, use under a physicians care.
