Castor oil is a very thick and lustrous oil. It is made up of several fatty acids, composed primarily of ricinoleic acid, with Oleic and linoleic acids found as minor components.
The oil is very often called for in naturopathic protocols. You'll often here of a "castor oil pack" used to draw infections or lymph congestion from under the skin. A castor oil pack simply consists of castor oil poured on a clean, natural piece of cloth, then held in place on the body for a period of time. There are in-fact castor oil packs made of muslin available on the internet specifically for such uses. Essential oils can be blended with the castor oil for specific uses depending on the application.
Castor oil is also an excellent carrier oil for formulas for skin care, where the skin is subject to harsh conditions, either very dry, cold, windy, or all three. It will create a protective barrier such that the skin's own oils are preserved.
